Dry Needling
Dry needling is an effective treatment used to relieve muscular pain, reduce tension, and restore normal movement and function. It is commonly used to treat both acute injuries and long term muscular conditions affecting the neck, back, shoulders, hips, and legs.
The term dry needling is used to differentiate this western medical technique from traditional eastern acupuncture. While both use fine needles, dry needling is based on modern anatomical and neurophysiological principles and focuses specifically on treating muscular trigger points, tight bands of tissue, and movement dysfunction.
During treatment, a sterile, ultra fine filament needle is inserted into a trigger point within a tight or shortened muscle. This stimulates what is known as a local twitch response - a brief involuntary contraction of the muscle that helps release tension, improve blood flow, and reduce pain. The response also encourages the release of natural chemicals within the body that assist with healing and recovery.
The needles used are extremely thin, and many patients barely feel them penetrate the skin. Healthy muscle tissue generally causes little to no discomfort during treatment. However, when a muscle is tight, inflamed, overworked, or contains active trigger points, patients may experience a brief cramping or twitching sensation. This response is normal and is often a positive sign that the targeted muscle is releasing.
At Bodyworkx Clinic, dry needling is frequently incorporated into treatment plans to help relieve pain, improve mobility, and support faster recovery. It is commonly used for conditions including:
- Back pain and lower back tightness
- Neck pain and stiffness
- Headaches and migraines
- Shoulder pain and postural tension
- Sciatica and nerve-related pain
- Sports injuries and muscle strains
- Tendon pain and overuse injuries
- Chronic muscular tightness and fatigue
- Hip and glute pain
- Tennis elbow and repetitive strain injuries
Dry needling can provide both immediate and long term benefits by helping to:
- Reduce muscular tension and trigger points
- Improve circulation and oxygen flow to tissues
- Decrease inflammation and pain
- Restore flexibility and range of motion
- Improve muscle activation and performance
- Accelerate recovery from training or injury
- Support rehabilitation and injury prevention
For best results, dry needling is often combined with myotherapy, remedial massage, stretching, mobility work, and corrective exercises to address the underlying causes of pain and dysfunction.
Whether you’re dealing with persistent tightness, recovering from injury, or looking to improve physical performance, our tailored treatment approach is designed to help you move more freely and feel your best.
