Frequently Asked Questions

What does a myotherapist do?

At Bodyworkx Clinic, myotherapy focuses on assessing, treating and managing muscular pain and movement dysfunction. Treatments are aimed at helping reduce pain, improve mobility and restore muscle balance. Common issues treated include headaches, neck pain, sports injuries, back pain, sciatica, frozen shoulder and repetitive strain injuries. Techniques may include deep tissue massage, trigger point therapy, dry needling, cupping, stretching and corrective exercise.

Is dry needling painful?

According to Bodyworkx Clinic, the needles used for dry needling are extremely thin and many people barely feel them enter the skin. If the muscle is very tight or sensitive, you may feel a brief cramping or twitch sensation — often called a “twitch response.” This can feel unusual or mildly uncomfortable, but it’s generally short-lived and is considered part of releasing the trigger point and reducing muscle tension.

Can remedial massage help headaches?

Yes. Bodyworkx Clinic specifically notes that remedial massage and myotherapy can help with neck and shoulder tension, headaches and posture-related strain. Their therapists commonly treat headaches linked to muscular tightness and restricted movement in the neck and shoulders.

Do you offer health fund rebates?

Bodyworkx Clinic states that a number of Australian private health funds provide rebates for Remedial Massage & Myotherapy treatments. It’s best to check your level of extras cover with your insurer before your appointment.

How many sessions will I need?

The number of sessions depends on the type and severity of the condition. Bodyworkx Clinic explains that acute injuries may improve within a few treatments, while chronic or long-standing problems can require a more detailed treatment plan involving ongoing sessions, corrective exercises and rehabilitation work. Your therapist will usually assess your condition first and recommend an appropriate plan based on your goals and recovery needs.

What to wear to your appointment?

We recommend wearing comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows you to move freely and is easy to adjust or remove if required for your assessment. For example, a clasp bra is often easier to remove than a sports bra if examination of the back or shoulders is needed.

If you are unsure what to wear, don't worry—your osteopath will always explain the assessment process, ensure your privacy and comfort are respected, and only ask you to uncover the area being examined if necessary.

What to expect during your Osteopathy appointment

1. Case History
Your appointment begins with a discussion about your current complaint, including how it started, what makes it better or worse, and how it is affecting your daily life. Your osteopath will also ask about your medical history, previous injuries, general health, and lifestyle to gain a thorough understanding of your overall health.

2. Assessment
A physical assessment is then performed to help identify the tissues contributing to your symptoms and determine the underlying cause of your pain. This may involve assessing your posture, movement, strength, and range of motion. Depending on the area being examined, you may be asked to wear suitable clothing or partially undress to allow for an accurate assessment. Your privacy, comfort, and consent will always be respected.

3. Treatment
Based on the findings of your assessment, your osteopath will provide treatment tailored to your individual needs. This may include hands-on manual therapy, soft tissue techniques, joint mobilisation, dry needling, cupping, or high-velocity low-amplitude (HVLA) manipulation ("cracking"), where clinically appropriate. Your osteopath will explain each technique and obtain your verbal consent before performing any treatment.

4. Management Plan
Before you leave, your osteopath will discuss a personalised management plan designed to support your recovery and help prevent future issues. This may include specific exerciserehabilitation, advice on sleep, stress management, ergonomics, and lifestyle modifications, as well as practical strategies to help you move with confidence.
